Supreme Court of Canada decision on C-92 with Mary Teegee, Naiomi Metallic, and Dr. Cindy Blackstock Webinar Recording & Presentation

Bill C92, or ‘An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families’ was passed in law in January of 2020, more recently challenged by the province of Quebec, and unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada on February 9, 2024. The Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling on the constitutionality of the Act solidifies this legislated pathway to self-determination regarding child & family services. However, that pathway remains ill-defined. This ruling is also interfaced with the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal case on First Nations children.

Dr. Cindy Blackstock (First Nations Caring Society), Naiomi Metallic (Schulich School of Law) and Mary Teegee (Carrier Sekani Child & Family Services and the Our Children Our Way Society) provided an informed overview of Bill C-92, the current landscape, and complexities, and answered many participant questions on the subject on March 8.

The presentation “Supreme Court of Canada decision on and interface with the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal case on First Nations children” is available on the Our Children Our Way Society website and the recording is available on the Our Children Our Way Society YouTube Channel.
