Ceremony hosted by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) Nation
The eve of the National Children’s Chiefs Commission’s (NCCC) inaugural in-person meeting on January 23, 2025, was a momentous occasion marked by a heartfelt dinner and ceremony hosted by the Squamish Nation.
This gathering celebrated the significant contributions of the NCCC members towards eradicating discrimination in First Nations Child & Family Services and implementing Jordan’s Principle.
During the ceremony, Squamish Nation Councillor Sempúlyan Stewart Gonzales emphasized the vital role of cultural leadership and traditional practices in guiding the commission’s efforts. The act of blanketing attendees, a traditional gesture of respect and protection, highlighted the collective commitment to reforming child and family services in ways that honor and incorporate First Nations cultures.
The event also featured insights from BC AFN Regional Chief Terry Teegee and First Nations Caring Society Executive Director Dr. Cindy Blackstock, who emphasized the unity and collaboration among Indigenous leaders across Canada.
Notable figures in attendance included Squamish Nation Chairperson Khelsilem, Chief Pauline Frost, Chief Kelsey Jacko, Debra Foxcroft, Nasuʔkin Cheryl Casimer, Mary Teegee, Karen Pelletier, Jennifer Charlesworth, and Samantha Cocker, among others, all united in their dedication to transformative change.
